OS Installation

You can install the OS on your dedicated server:

Please note that for Chipcore Line servers, you can install the OS only using the automated OS installation templates in the Control panel.

Depending on the server configuration, the following automated OS installation templates can be available in the Control panel:

  • Debian;
  • Ubuntu;
  • Proxmox;
  • Opensuse;
  • VMware ESXi;
  • Windows Server — only the trial version is available. You can install a licensed version of the OS from your iso image via the KVM console or using the Selectel Boot Menu;
  • Oracle Linux;
  • AlmaLinux;
  • Rocky.

You can also install any OS (as well as from an ISO image) via the KVM console or Selectel Boot Menu.


  • Proxmox is a Debian-based Linux distribution that helps to quickly deploy and manage virtual machine infrastructure through a web interface. It is possible to create highly accessible clusters using Proxmox VE ON Manager. The Proxmox automatic installation image uses the open version of Proxmox VE (without support), which installs additional packages over Debian. If you need official Proxmox support, you will have to change the repository via a subscription.
  • The VMware ESXi hypervisor is already a de facto standard for virtualization. Almost any OS can be used as a guest OS: Linux, Windows, FreeBSD, Solaris and others. VMware ESXi distribution size is only 348 MB, most of which comprises drivers for various OSs (VMware Tools). You can only install a free redistributable hypervisor using our Control Panel. Deploying a full-fledged virtual machine cluster requires the installation of additional paid components purchased separately through VMware partners.

Automated OS Installation

Go to the Operating system tab on the Server page in the Control Panel and click Change OS configuration.

Select an OS template:

  • For Linux-based systems, the optimal RAID level and partition are set by default. If you require special parameters, partition the disk manually when setting up the automated installation template;
  • If you select Windows Server, we will install the trial version. You can partition the disk using Windows tools after installing the OS.

The selected OS will be installed automatically, according to the order of attaching volumes (NVMe ⟶ SSD ⟶ HDD). If it is important for you to install the OS on another volume, use manual installation.

The autoinstaller does not allow you to leave a non-partitioned area on the disk. However, you can create a partition containing the remaining free space and delete it after OS installation. Please contact technical support.

OS Installation via the KVM Console

The KVM console allows you to use ISO images to install an image of any OS from scratch:

  1. Open the Virtual media menu and select Virtual storage.
  2. Select ISO File in the Logical Drive Type section of the window and click Open image. Two folders are available to users: ISO and private. The ISO directory contains images accessible to all users. The private directory contains ISO images accessible to specified users only. Private is not displayed by default – it only appears once at least one native image has been preloaded. Contact technical support and ask to upload a self-prepared image to the private directory, for example, the FreeBSD ISO file which you can mount and boot from
  3. Select the image and click Open in the corresponding folder.
  4. Select Plug in, then OK.

Installation will start from the selected image. Arbitrary partitioning of the disk can be performed during installation if necessary.

OS Installation via Selectel Boot Menu

You can access the boot loaders of the most common server operating systems, as well as programs for system diagnostics and recovery, through the Selectel Boot menu.

Boot to the Selectel Boot Menu:

  1. Go to the Server page.
  2. In the Operating system section, click Change boot template.
  3. Expand the Boot Template Menu and select Boot to Boot Menu.
  4. Click Save and reboot.
  5. Open the KVM console.

All distributions listed in the Install Operating System are net-install versions. When installed, only the core and initrd are loaded. Other files can be downloaded from local or public repositories. At the beginning of the installation process, you will be asked to specify the repository from which the boot will be performed. You can use our repository to boot faster and more conveniently.

System installation is performed in the same way as when installing from a disk. Some OSs (with Semi-Auto next to them in the list) can be installed in semi-automatic mode. When choosing this option, the installer requests essential parameters (for example, network settings, RAID/LVM settings, etc.).

EOL for OS

In some cases, we disable the ability to automatically install OS configurations that have reached their end of life (EOL), as well as configurations that have not been claimed yet.

When EOL is approaching for an OS configuration, a notification will be sent.
