How to Delete a Virtual Data Center

Please note that when deleting a virtual data center (vDC), all information stored in it will be deleted — it will be impossible to restore this data.

You can only delete empty vDCs. Beforehand, delete all vApps, VMs, disks, vApp templates, and catalogs through vCloud Director.

First, open the vDC you want to delete:

  1. Go to the Cloud powered by VMware section in the Selectel Control panel.
  2. Click on the name of the corresponding data center.
  3. Enter your username and password to log in to the vCloud Director web panel.
  4. On the vCloud Director home page, open the vDC you want to delete.

Sequentially delete the contents of the virtual data center. See instructions below.

Deleting vApps

Follow these steps to delete a vApp:

  1. Go to Compute → vApps.
  2. In the vApp card, expand the Actions menu and click Power → Stop.
  3. If necessary, download the vApp template in *.ova format. To do this, expand the Actions menu and click Download.
  4. Expand the Actions menu and click Delete to delete a vApp.

Please note that after deleting a vApp, all VMs inside this vApp will also be deleted.

Before deleting, you can create a vApp container template and use it in the future. This way, the data from all VMs inside the container will be saved.

vCloud Director doesn’t save individual VMs ― only the entire vApp. To save a VM that is not associated with any of the existing vApps, you need to transfer it to an existing or new container:

  1. Go to Compute → Virtual Machines.
  2. In the VM card, expand the Actions menu and click Power Off to turn off the VM.
  3. In the Actions menu, click Move to move or Copy to copy the VM.
  4. Select a container from the vApps list and click OK.

Please note that to create a new vApp container, you need to go to Compute → vApps and click New vApp.

Deleting a Virtual Machine

After deleting all vApps, go to Compute → Virtual Machines and delete the remaining VMs. For each of them, follow these steps:

  1. In the VM card, expand the Actions menu and click Power → Power Off to turn off the VM.
  2. Expand the Actions menu and click Delete to delete the VM.

Deleting Disks

To delete additional disks, go to the Storage → Named Disks section of the selected DC in the Data Centers section. In the list of disks, select the one you want to delete and click Delete.

Deleting Catalogs, vApp templates, and Uploaded Files

Go to the Libraries section in the vCloud Director Control panel. Delete all catalogs, vApp templates, and files (Media & Other) related to the data center being deleted.

Since the vApp templates and uploaded files are stored in catalogs, you can simply delete the created catalog. Then all files stored in it will be deleted.

Please note that one catalog can store files related to different vDCs. If you delete such a catalog, all files stored in it will be deleted and become inaccessible to other vDCs. Make sure the catalog doesn’t contain files from other vDCs before deleting it. Otherwise, manually delete all files related to the vDC being deleted according to the instructions below.

Follow these steps to delete a catalog:

  1. Select the Libraries section from the left panel.
  2. Go to Content Libraries → Catalogs.
  3. For each of the catalogs, expand the (⋮) menu and click Delete.

Along with the catalog, all its contents (vApp templates and uploaded files) will be deleted. You can download the content beforehand:

  1. Go to the Content Libraries → vApp Templates or Content Libraries → Media & Other tab.
  2. Expand the (⋮) menu next to the object name and click Download.

Follow these steps to delete files manually:

  1. Go to the Content Libraries → vApp Templates or Content Libraries → Media & Other tab.
  2. Expand the (⋮) menu next to the object name and click Delete.

Deleting a Virtual Data Center

After all vApps, VMs, disks, vApp templates, and files stored in catalogs are deleted, you can delete a vDC.

In the Selectel Control panel, go to the Cloud powered by VMware section. From the vDC card, expand the (⋮) menu and click Delete data center.

The virtual data center will be deleted, and the funds will not be charged for it.
